Mythological Creatures: Pegasus

MythDen.com - Pegasus

The mighty Pegasus is a mythical horse, which, unlike the unicorn has wings. Pegasus is usually portrayed as being divine and white in colour, featuring in many tales of Greek mythology. It is said that he sprung from Medusa's body when Perseus chopped off her head, and from then on, roamed freely. Bellerophon captured and tamed Pegasus with a golden bridle, which had been a gift from the goddess Athena. Together they faced many adventures, one of which was the slaying of the seemingly invulnerable Chimera...

Bellerophon was thrown from Pegasus by Zeus when he attempted to fly to Mount Olympus (Greek mythology's heaven) and survived, but was severely crippled. However, Pegasus made it into heaven, where it is said he still is, and spends his days carrying lightning bolts for Zeus. Pegasus' constellation, which is named after him, can often be seen on a clear night.
